ROBERTO ESCAMILLA-GARDUÑO

A director guided by intuition, identity, and the power of storytelling—thriving through deep collaboration and shared vision.

COMMERCIAL WORK

When directing commercials, I approach each project with the same care and respect I would give to a narrative film. I see every commercial as a short story, and I enjoy building layers—imagining the characters’ backstories, thinking about what they would wear, where they live, and how they move through their world. For some, that might be excessive, but for me, those details help shape a more emotionally resonant and impactful piece. I’m meticulous about pre-production—casting is one of my favorite parts—and I thrive when collaborating with artists across all departments. I deeply believe that my role as a director is to assemble the right team and guide each collaborator to tap into their highest potential. From cinematographers and production designers to wardrobe stylists, sound designers, and editors, I see every commercial as a symphony—each voice essential, coming together to create something none of us could have achieved alone.

MY IDENTITY, MY VOICE

As a queer Latino filmmaker, I’m committed to ensuring that queer and minority representation is present in all of my work. Whether I’m directing a commercial, a narrative piece, a music video, or a photo series, I see each project as an opportunity to amplify voices and stories that are often overlooked. I believe deeply in the transformative power of filmmaking and its ability to foster empathy, inspire change, and reflect the world as it truly is. My identity is not just part of who I am—it’s a core value that shapes the way I create. Through my craft, I aim to deliver messages of equality, empowerment, respect, and love.

CREATIVE PROJECTS

BEYOND COMMERCIALS

Outside of commercial work, I’m constantly exploring new ways to create and connect. I’ve directed two short films—Changes, which I also wrote, and Binge, currently in post-production. I’m now developing two new narrative short films: Abuela’s Treasure and And You Were Here. I’m also working on They Exist, a docu-series that amplifies the voices of queer individuals living with courage and vulnerability, spotlighting real stories that deserve to be seen and heard. In addition, I’m creating Rewriting Memory Lane, a mixed-media experiential piece focused on inner child healing, and developing The Homo Zine, a photography project exploring queer identity, fashion, and masculinity through still imagery. These personal works remind me why I create in the first place—and why it matters that they exist. Below are a few selected photographs from that series.
